Do you like this?

april/may cover

Our April/May issue is (pretty much) all about downtown! It's also a third anniversary issue, so happy birthday to us!

The lovely family on our cover are the MacLeods, who are the proud owners of the famous Bull Durham house on Mangum Street. They graciously invited us and, by extension, you to take the grand tour. Read their story courtesy of Eleanor-Scott Davis and check out Briana Brough's excellent photographs.

In a photo essay, Briana gives you a backstage pass to four downtown Durham theaters: Manbites Dog, DPAC, The Carolina Theatre and Hayti Heritage Center. See these institutions as never before.

And no night taking in a live performance would be complete without a stop for dinner and a drink at a downtown hotspot. We feature the perfect marriage between theater and restaurants like Revolution, Tyler's Taproom and Piedmont.

Just in time for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, we bring you an interview with Deirdre Haj, the actress and producer who took the helm of the venerable festival a couple of years ago. Among other things, she discusses how Full Frame is looking more and more to increase their year-round profile throughout Durham, particularly by mentoring and inspiring young people.

We also talked with Scott Selig, associate vice president for capital assets and real estate for Duke. He was instrumental in Duke's efforts to support downtown revitalization by leasing substantial space. He gave his prognosis for how and when downtown will hit its next growth spurt.

There's one piece in this issue that strays from the downtown theme. But once you're through reading Iesha Brown's moving account of the K-12 school run out of Duke Hospital, that'll be the last thing on your mind. Kids facing serious illness find strength and hope through the lessons provided by their devoted teachers. A must-read.

  • Interview with Deirdre Haj

Deirdre happens to be my sister and I don't live in the Durham area - is there any way for me to obtain a copy of the interview?
