Feb 2011 cover

We bring you an eclectic mix of compelling stories and personalities in the latest issue of Durham Magazine.

Our cover story both quantifies and explains a bit of conventional wisdom that's floated just below the radar for years: Durham is a lesbian haven. Writer Emily Matchar found both some predictable - we're tolerant! - and some not-so-predictable - cheap real estate? - reasons for the phenomenon. In words and pictures, find out why we're a "potluck city."

Editor Matt Dees sat down with Duke President Richard Brodhead for a one-on-one interview in which he outlined his commitment to improving Durham beyond Duke's stone walls, as well as his plans for the future and what he likes to do to let his hair down. Check out the print edition for a condensed Q-&-A, then stop back here at www.durhammag.com next week for the complete interview.

Staff writer Iesha Brown found inspiration at the Emily K Center, the Coach K-backed community center that helps at-risk kids succeed in the classroom and beyond. Try to read her story about these bright and persistent youngsters without getting goosebumps.

Community & Events Editor Dana Lange takes you inside the home of Jane and Tom Dimmig, a custom-built farmhouse on a 60-acre tract in North Durham, complete with a stable filled with five horses. Beautiful pictures by Briana Brough accompany this excellent tale.

Senior Editor Eleanor-Scott Davis spent a day with a Durham bride-to-be while she was pampered and prepped at a local spa, learning all the tricks to making yourself radiant for the big day.

All this plus cooking at home with Chef Tim Lyons of blu seafood and bar, a beautiful downtown wedding, pics from the glittering galas and gatherings around town and much more.

Starting this weekend, look to buy your copy at Parker & Otis, Regulator Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Whole Foods Market, Sam's Quik Shop, Borders and Harris Teeter. Click here to get a subscription for yourself or a friend.

  • Negative comments about Lesbians on the cover

In the 50's we might have had comments about Coloreds on the cover. Maybe we need two homophobics on the cover - but how do we explain them to our kids?
There's always someone we can point the finger at to make ourselves feel more important. I'm not a lesbian, but it shocked me to read that it actually still bothered someone that people are different and diverse in Durham, like everywhere else and most of us love it that way! Go, Durham Magazine!

  • avoiding a teachable moment

    To A Durham Parent,
With what do you take issue? What part of the cover photograph do you find difficult to explain to a 9-year-old? Tell her or him that these are two women and some girls like girls. You are making something a big deal that is not. What about this photo is so upsetting that you felt compelled to write a letter about it, though you insist that you are not prejudiced? I only wish that my family and friends and teachers had told me as a 9-year-old that it was ok to fall in love with a girl. I would have known much earlier that I wasn't the only one. You are not protecting your child. You are sowing the seeds of intolerance or fear.
    Respectfully,
    Jennifer L. Holt

  • Alexis and Julia on the cover!

I am so proud that Julia and Alexis were on the cover--they are doing such important things to make Durham a better place! We have to honor their contributions, and SONG (Southerners On New Ground) are proud to have them as members and support them!~
