  • Negative comments about Lesbians on the cover

In the 50's we might have had comments about Coloreds on the cover. Maybe we need two homophobics on the cover - but how do we explain them to our kids?
There's always someone we can point the finger at to make ourselves feel more important. I'm not a lesbian, but it shocked me to read that it actually still bothered someone that people are different and diverse in Durham, like everywhere else and most of us love it that way! Go, Durham Magazine!

  • avoiding a teachable moment

    To A Durham Parent,
With what do you take issue? What part of the cover photograph do you find difficult to explain to a 9-year-old? Tell her or him that these are two women and some girls like girls. You are making something a big deal that is not. What about this photo is so upsetting that you felt compelled to write a letter about it, though you insist that you are not prejudiced? I only wish that my family and friends and teachers had told me as a 9-year-old that it was ok to fall in love with a girl. I would have known much earlier that I wasn't the only one. You are not protecting your child. You are sowing the seeds of intolerance or fear.
    Respectfully,
    Jennifer L. Holt

  • Alexis and Julia on the cover!

I am so proud that Julia and Alexis were on the cover--they are doing such important things to make Durham a better place! We have to honor their contributions, and SONG (Southerners On New Ground) are proud to have them as members and support them!~

  • Love the "L Word of the South" issue!

How excited was I to see the fantastic cover to the Feb/March 2011 issues, talking about how Durham has become the "L Word of the South" and featuring two incredible individuals, Julia Wallace and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, who are fearless in their love and their passion for making Durham a wonderful, vibrant city for all peoples! Everyone who lives in and/or loves Durham should be PROUD that so many people from all walks of life--lesbian, straight, queer, gay, bi, trans--feel that Durham is a city in which they want to live and love!

  • Feb/Mar 2011 Cover

When I received my current issue in the mail, I instantly shook my head. I know...I know....this is 2011. By now, one would think that all people should be able to embrace homosexuality and those who choose to live this lifestyle. As a Durham citizen who has been taught to love and respect all people as ONE (not by color, religion, sex, etc.), I found it upsetting to have to explain to my nine year old that the picture on the cover is of two women and not a man and a woman. At first glance, the female wearing the fedora appears to be a man. However, after reading the caption, it is clear that the female is a woman. Please read carefully --- I AM NOT PREJUDICED OR DISCRIMINATORY. I completely understand the freedoms we have in America and as mentioned earlier, I was taught to love and respect ALL PEOPLE. It just so happens that with all the freedoms we have been given, it makes it very difficult for those parents who are striving to rear their children with biblical principles and morals. The lifestyle that is portrayed on the cover of this issue is in opposition to how my husband and I teach our children. It is also in opposition of the law of nature. We must constantly educate our children about life (choices and consequences). However, it just so happens that this educational opportunity was unsolicited and unwanted. In today's society, very few will stand up for righteousness, for morality or for the innocence of our children. So, life will continue to be....as we walk with blinders on....heads bowed....trying to keep the pace....

(And in case you're wondering, I have cancelled my subscription to Durham Magazine.)

  • How we became the L Word capital of the South

I was happy to see the article about Durham being a Lesbian haven, and particularlyseeing that the article highligted our friends, Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Julia Wallace. They are very active in the Lesbian,Gay and Queer community, and have done a lot to support others in the community. They are a positive force within the community, and have much to contribute.

  • Feb/Mar 2011 Issue

I am proud of Durham Magazine for highlighting the love that radiates through the Bull City. A city that is accepting of all its people is a thriving city.

I refer to us as the D-Word town.
