Five Events You Shouldn't Miss This Weekend

There are tons of cool events happening this weekend (and one early next week). The Bulls are hosting cool events all weekend long. That's in addition to two musical concerts (featuring some heavy hitters, I might add), one last chance to catch an American Dance Festival performance this season and an opening exhibit at the Museum of Life and Science. Be sure to get out this weekend and enjoy all that Durham has to offer.

  1. Happy Birthday, Wool E.! Check out this family-friendly weekend extravaganza at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. On Friday, former Southern High standout and current Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard will throw out the first pitch against the Norfolk Tides and sign autographs for fans. Saturday, kids 12 and under eat free and fans can win tickets to Tuesday's Bob Dylan show, featuring Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. And Sunday is Wool E. Bull's birthday. Come see 17 of his mascot friends, including UNC-Chapel Hill's Ramses and the NCCU Eagle, help him celebrate. Kids under 12 get free birthday cake. Make sure to buy tickets in advance. Durham Bulls Athletic Park, 409 Blackwell St.; 956-2855
  2. Will McFarlaneBenefit Concert — To celebrate its 10th anniversary of feeding the hungry, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina hosts a concert featuring The Will McFarlane Band. McFarlane, best known for his bluesy, folksy guitar playing, joins special guests Armand Lenchek and Adrian Duke Friday at 7:30pm. Carolina Theatre, 309 W. Morgan St.; $15; 560-3030
  3. Mark Morris Dance Group— Don’t miss your last chance to see an American Dance Festival performance Friday and Saturday at 8pm. The Mark Morris Dance Group infuses both ballet and modern dance to dazzle audiences. The company is also committed to live music and has teamed up with leading orchestras, opera companies and musicians. Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St.; $24-$45; 680-2787
  4. Dinosaur Trail — After 77 million years, they’re back. Walk through the half-mile forest path and come within reach of life-sized dinosaurs, including the 65-foot-long Alamosaurus. Saturday and Sunday witness hundreds of real fossils and enjoy face painting. For more information about the opening weekend click hereMuseum of Life and Science, 433 Murray Ave.; $12.50 (adults) & $9.50 (children); 220-5429
  5. The Bob Dylan Show — So, this event isn’t happening until Tuesday, July 28, but I just had to mention it. Trust me, you won't want to miss it. The legendary Bob Dylan rocks downtown with the great Willie Nelson and Family, as well as Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Mellencamp. The gates open at 5pm and the show starts at 5:30pm. Durham Bulls Athletic Park, 409 Blackwell St.; $67.75; 956-2855
