Chamber Awards 2009

I had the pleasure of attending the 2009 Business Excellence Awards hosted by the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce last night at the Hilton Durham.

Truth be told, sometimes these kinds of events are a bit of a drag. But there was a genuine buzz in the air last night. The many folks I talked with were jazzed about where their own businesses are and where the city as a whole is headed.

It's been a rough year or so, but the mood last night was optimistic.

Here are some photos from the event. Before clicking over, though, check out the winners below and, if you haven't already, the cute video presentation put together by the Chamber.

Congrats to the following winners (click on links for more info):

Nonprofit category: Student U (I had the pleasure of meeting these devoted folks, as I happened to be sitting at their table. They were pretty stoked about the win, and so was I!)

Sustainability category: Riley Life Industries

Small Business category: The American Dance Festival

Medim Business category: The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham

Large Business category: The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

Five Can't-Miss Weekend Events

Bayou-inspired musician Adrian Duke performs Friday night at Papa Mojo's Roadhouse. The weekend has (almost) arrived, and I’m thrilled. Unfortunately, I’ll be leaving the Bull City Friday for a trip to Virginia and Maryland to visit family. So you'll have to enjoy some or all of these weekend happenings and tell me all about them come Monday.

There are some cool, inspiring and, of course, fun events going on in our city. Here are five sure bets.

1. sladesign Fashion Show V — It's Fashion Friday at Golden Belt. Check out designer Marcela Slade’s newest collections of skirts, dresses, tops and tees at 7:30pm. The collection is a blend of local, European and South American styles. Enjoy complimentary wine and cheese and meet Marcela after the show. All items will be available for purchase. Golden Belt (Building 2), 807 E. Main St.; Free; 967-7700

2. Faith City Come Alive — Changing A Generation with Faith Assembly Christian Center is hosting a fundraiser concert featuring gospel artists J. Moss and Damita Haddon Friday at 7:30pm. Cynthia Jones, John Thorpe and Family, Warren Caldwell and the FACC Praise Team also will perform. Proceeds will help Changing A Generation prevent juvenile delinquency by developing a broad range of family centered services and an environment of education excellence. Come out and support. Carolina Theatre, 309 W. Morgan St.; $31 and $51; 560-3030

3. Dancing for the Camera The 14th Annual American Dance Festival Dancing for the Camera: International Festival of Film and Dance runs through the entire weekend. The festival, directed and curated by Douglass Rosenburg, features over 32 works, including 9 U.S. premieres and eight world premieres. Program one is Friday at 8pm, program 3 is Saturday at 8pm and program 4 is Sunday at 10am in Duke’s White Lecture Hall. Program 2 is at 11am in the Nasher Museum. Duke University (White Lecture Hall), 113 Campus Dr. and Nasher Museum, 2001 Campus Dr.; Free; 684-6402

4. Adrian Duke Projek Adrian Duke resides in Hillsborough, but after hearing him play the piano and sing, you will swear he's from New Orleans. His music is undeniably the blues but it also blends funk, jazz and R&B. While you’re listening to some great music on Friday at 9:30pm, enjoy some of Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse authentic Cajun Creole cooking and you will surely believe you’re down on Bourbon Street. Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse, 5410-Y Highway 55; $8; 361-2222

5. Duke Multiple Myeloma Bike Ride — Bike for a cause this Saturday at 8am. The 50K or 100K road bike ride is in honor of patients with multiple myeloma and their families. According to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, multiple myeloma is a blood disease. It’s a cancer of the plasma cells (an important part of the immune system). Donations are used to support research against multiple myeloma at Duke University. Both rides start at the North Pavilion at Duke University Hospital and travel west through Duke Forest. The 100K ride continues into rural Orange County before returning to the hospital. Duke University Hospital, 2301 Erwin Rd.; $40; 452-9808

Go out and enjoy one or more of these events for me!  Then, drop me a line to let me know your thoughts.

Warming Up for ADF

Check out these photos from the American Dance Festival Block Party on Sunday night. It was a warm-up event for this year's exciting ADF series. Check out our events calendar for more info about performance dates beginning June 18.

These photos were shot by Andrew Synowiez at the block party between Parker & Otis and Pop's. They come to us courtesy of Cayte Connell of ADF.

The ADF, now in its 76th year, moved to Durham in 1978. Madonna attended the first six-week dance school held in North Carolina that year, on scholarship.

This year's performances explore the intersection of ballet and modern dance. Many will be held at DPAC, though there will be one very special performance at Golden Belt.
