Wine Wednesdays with Arturo Ciompi

Oscar night is an excuse for the biggest party my wife and I throw every year. Wine from my cellar flows and people are in and out of the kitchen grabbing a glassful and scurrying back to the show--provided by a rented projector that we flash onto the wall for an almost "being there" effect.
I served wines of all ages last Sunday – from 2 to 28 years of age. But what struck me the most was just how much better many were with even a year's worth of "aging."
I highly recommend that if you find a wine that you like, consider putting at least a bottle away and try it again a year or two later. Most wines that cost $10 or more will benefit from a bit of time resting comfortably on a wine rack – away from heat or vibrations. A number of 2007 Chardonnays showed ever better than they had upon release. Some 2006 Cabernets and Malbecs were less grapey and showed far more bouquet and integrated flavors than when I had first purchased them.
Clearly not every one is going to be a collector. But a bottle here or there, put out of sight, will reap nice rewards for you in the near future. Ask a good wine merchant which wines he or she sells that are worthy of a little down time.

Winter is still alive, and many are the pleasurable evenings on which to curl up in front of the Olympics, movie rental or a roaring fire.
Instead of downing Cheetos, chips, dips and a brew, consider almonds, walnuts, Cheddar and the calming fragrance and well-being that a glass of Port achieves. Glorify your evening with one of the world's most sophisticated beverages.

Dow makes fabulous ports of all varieties. From their intense, age-worthy Vintage Ports ($80) to their Tawnies - anything from Fine Tawny ($13) to their 40 Year Old Tawny ($138). (The more time in wood, the less sweet and more subtly complex the drink becomes). Their 10 Year version is a marvelous bridge between stickiness and sublime, ethereal smoothness.

Dow's Aged 10 Years Tawny Port $30 suggested retail price. Many Port reviews will mention a bouquet of Hazelnu
t, orange, coffee, dried-fruit and a honey-brown sugar bouquet. The flavors will
feature plum, creme brulee, toffee, dried cherry with a sumptuous richness balanced by refreshing acidity. Yes, ALL these features are there! But it is the way in which this fabulous drink combines all these elements into a smorgasbord of earthly delights that makes fine Port such a joy and thrill. This wine is slightly sweet and pairs so beautifully with nuts and/or cheese that you'll feel as though you've discovered a secret of the ancients. Beautifully balanced and crafted. 92/100 points

Twenty-five years of winemaking at the Gordon Brothers property makes them pioneers in Washington State's Columbia Valley--especially where red wines are concerned. Their Syrah is a deeply satisfying red, and exclusively estate-grown grapes provide around 2,300 cases yearly.

2006 Syrah, Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards  $20 suggested retail price
Loamy, "roasted", fecund yet fresh berry scents. Deeply fragrant and gratifying with Licorice, Basil and Thyme elements. Intense, medium-bodied flavors with refreshing acids and firm, structuring tannins. A lusty mouthful that could benefit from bottle age to fully show its paces. Match now with tangy flank steak or spicy black bean dishes. Drink now-2014. 89-91 points

Exciting Changes to Our Blog

Hey there, dear readers:

Wanted to give y'all a heads up about a new format we're bringing to the blog. In an effort to ensure we have new content every day, we're going to launch daily standing features that will appear each week.

As you may have noticed, Lisa Rossi has started putting together Music Mondays (yes, I'm a sucker for alliteration) where she highlights an artist from our local music scene.

I'm going to start profiling the good work of a local nonprofit every Tuesday. (Urban Ministries of Durham is coming tomorrow!)

Arturo will continue sharing his best finds every week in Wine Wednesdays.

Iesha Brown will continue bringing you the hottest weekend events every Thursday.

And Lisa and Iesha will team up to bring you Fashion Fridays each week. The first installment will feature the new fair trade college apparel business School House Ethical Fashion.

To be clear, this will not be the be all and end all of our blog content. We'll continue to bring you news and notes from around our city as they happen. This is mostly an effort to widen the reach of our blog and ensure we have something for our faithful readers every single day. We'll do our best to post each of these daily features first thing every morning. Hope you'll check it out.

Most importantly, we'd like to hear from you. Got a suggestion for any of these features or anything else? Please let us know. I can be reached at mattdees@durhammag.com

Thanks so much for reading.

Smith-Madrone is a low-key winery than never seems to burn hotly under the spotlight. Yet their wines, since 1971, are gems from high atop Napa Valley's Spring Mountain District. Brothers Stuart and Charles Smith recouped this vineyard land first planted in the 1880's. The wines are never boring and speak to a very specific and real terroir. Get to know them.

2007 Smith-Madrone Chardonnay, Napa Valley $30 suggested retail price
Bright, sunshine-saturated nose of Springtime herbs and stone fruits. The freshness factor cannot be overstated. Spreadable, lush citrus compote sensations. Mouth watering flavors of lemon, spicy apple and lingering sprightly fruit. Nimble acids keep its richness in check and its refreshment front and center. A beautiful, memorable wine for Cod, lemon chicken or a Couscous salad.

Petite Sirah (Syrah) is an often misunderstood hybrid, created in France in the late 19th century. It simply glows in Californian soil with a rich grapey flavor and solid as a rock texture that's a perfect foil for mid-Winter fare. Golfer Greg Norman's foray into California wines has created a beauty.

2007 Greg Norman Paso Robles Petite Sirah  $15 suggested retail price.
Heady vinous bouquet of super-ripe plum, violet and spicy black fruit. Explosive and penetrating. Rich flavorful buckets of fresh, just picked fruit flavors. Non-complex but soul satisfying and lip-smackingly joyful. Great for spicy meat or Lentil-based dishes. 91/100 points

Rodney Strong was a professional ballet dancer who knew that age would eventually catch up. I "could not be an old dancer, but could be an old winemaker"! Fifty years later, this winery is still making outstanding wine at affordable prices.

2007 Rodney Strong, Sonoma County, Cabernet Sauvignon  $19 suggested retail price
Alluringly deep black cherry on an earthy, tarry, charcoal-tinged nose. Long, smooth flavors display optimal ripeness. No acidic bite, yet it spicily refreshes and lingers long. Textbook Sonoma, this is a wonderful bottle from a great vintage.  90/100 points

Sonoma County's Lancaster Estate produces a separate wine that stands proudly on its own. Seemingly made just as lovingly as its big sister, this wine sees 18 months in French oak and always rewards its drinkers with lavish body, texture and presence.

2006 Roth Cabernet Sauvignon, $40 suggested retail price

Made from hillside Alexander Valley fruit, its sweet, ripe berry scents with pepper and tobacco notes inhabit a subtly graceful bouquet that seduces rather than overpowers. Substantial, mouth-filling flavors of spicy dried cherry and a smooth, creamy finish. Supple and rich, this would love a Dijon-roasted leg of lamb. Drink now through 2011.

Frankly, when it comes to Champagne, I gravitate towards rosés. Not only are they more food friendly but, even standing alone, I tend to prefer bubblies that have Pinot Noir headlining the blend. Naturally there are magnificent exceptions, but here is a rosé that will please the palate and warm your heart.

Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé  $48 suggested retail price
A light Salmon color, it offers an active, pinpoint bubble with roses, wheat and spiced strawberries on the nose. Refreshing citrus-like flavors contain a smoky, brisk aftertaste filled with yeasty goodness. Hard to imagine it being anything but a true Champagne, this from a splendid, consistent producer.  91/100 points

Ed Sbragia is duly famous for his many years as Beringer's chief winemaker. His Reserve Cabernets and Chardonnays were among the best to come out of Napa Valley. He now plies his trade at his eponymous estate in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley and he hasn't missed a beat. His most recent Chardonnay release would make an ideal gift for your friends or yourself.

2007 Sbragia Family Vineyards Chardonnay, Home Ranch, $26 suggested retail price
Beaming with vanilla, butterscotch and graceful yet enormous spiced apple and pear scents. A wow wine. The flavors are smooth, polished and long with just enough requisite acidity to keep it lively yet luscious. For those who love an old style, "grab you by the collar" Chardonnay, this is it. 91/100 points
