When you’re young and less than wealthy, using art to create an inviting home can pose a bit of a challenge. We love the local artists in the area and hope to be able to grow a collection of those pieces as well – but in the meantime we also find ourselves stumbling into DIY art projects around our home. These quick and easy projects have really made for a personal and cozy space that we really enjoy coming home to and hope that they work for your casa too.

Postcards

Pick up those free postcards from your favorite restaurants around town and frame them for a nice memory of a great meal. We have a Guglhupf Bakery postcard framed in our kitchen and we love the local touch, plus it reminds us to go buy bread.

Another idea, an oldie but goodie, is to mail yourself a postcard from a memorable vacation. Yes, snail mail. Jot down your experiences – how much money you won in Vegas, what celebrities you met at the pool - and frame them when you get home.

Maps

Maps are a fantastic source of DIY art. We really cannot say enough about what you can do with a map to jazz up your space. Find a large map, use spray adhesive to adhere it to a bulletin board (or use a roll of cork in a poster frame for a more finished look) and add push pins to highlight all the places you’ve visited or would like to visit. It’s a great conversation piece for any room.

You can also carve letters, maybe your initials, out of florist foam and wrap them in maps. Take it to the next level by using maps of where you’re from. Hang them on the wall or place them on a shelf for a fun home accessory. The best part? You can likely find these supplies on the cheap at the Scrap Exchange.

Children and Pet Paintings

Take your favorite photos of your child, your dog or even your turtle and use photo editing software to give the image a bright and artistic vibe. One of our favorites is BeFunky.com, it’s free and you don’t even have to set up an account to use it. Select the under painting tool for a painted effect and either frame the image or even splurge for a canvas wrapped print.

Not interested in photos? Always better is to commission your child or your pup to make a painting just for your home. They probably won’t charge you too much.

We hope these ideas will warm up your walls and give your room just the personal touch you’ve been looking for without breaking the bank.
