Michael J. Schoenfeld

New Triangle Community Foundation board member Michael J. Schoenfeld, Duke’s vice president for public affairs and government relations

Triangle Community Foundation, a nonprofit charity that manages $145 million in funds established by families, businesses, individuals and organizations, announced the addition of four new members to its board, including Michael J. Schoenfeld, Duke’s vice president for public affairs and government relations.

Other new board members include: Dianne Birch, Chatham County community volunteer; Easter Maynard, executive director of ChildTrust Foundation of Golden Corral Inc.; and James H. Speed Jr., president and CEO of N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Company.

In addition to overseeing Duke’s communications, government relations and external affairs and serving as the university’s chief spokesperson, Michael also serves on a number of local and regional boards, including the Durham Public Library System and the Chamber of Commerce. That experience should go a long way in assisting in the management of the more than 750 funds – ranging in size from $10,000 to $10 million, primarily for the benefit of Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties – that the Foundation currently manages.

During the 2010-11 fiscal year, the Foundation granted more than $14 million to nonprofits, schools and community efforts.
