DPAC

Durham's been making all kinds of lists for its cool factor recently, and here's one more:

According to the trade publication Pollstar, which covers the worldwide concert industry, our very own Durham Performing Arts Center is the second busiest theater in the world.

The renowned theater lost out only to the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City in the magazine’s 2012 Midyear Worldwide Ticket Sales count from the top 100 theater venues, nabbing the silver with a whopping 223,641 tickets sold for shows played between Jan. 1 and June 30 of this year.

To top it off, The Carolina Theatre placed on the list as well. With 32,678 tickets sold worldwide, the Carolina came in at the 88 spot. For our city's size, having two world-class theaters down the street from each other definitely adds to the collective list of many, many reasons why Durham is so awesome.

cultural shift

i grew up in boston, lived in nyc. i decided to settle here a decade ago for the cultural shift that's exemplified in this dpac article. let's face it, our largest cities, once the cutural bastions, are not what they use to be. major cities have become homogenized money centers where people have to give up their time and energy just to rent an apartment of compromised dimension. creativity requires a looser environment, which Durham readily offers. i experience three times the number of cultural activities as my sister well-tenured in Greenwich Village - and way better seats to boot!
