Architect Phil Freelon has done acclaimed projects all over the nation. But he's not let that stop him from doing great work right here in Durham.

In addition to the likes of DBAP and Durham Station, The Freelon Group also designed the Dr. Phail Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center on the Durham Technical Community College campus.

As a gesture of thanks, Durham Tech officials unveiled Friday historic displays commemorating Mr. Freelon, his company and the building's namesake, Phail Wynn.

Durham Tech President Dr. Bill Ingram said the partnership between The Freelon Group and the school is prime example of business and institutions working together. "Durham," he said, "thrives on collaboration."

Dr. Wynn was genuinely grateful for the honor, which he conveyed, as is his wont, with a bit of humor.

"I turn 65 tomorrow," he said wryly. "On Tuesday, I got my Medicare card. As I cross that threshold, having the opportunity to celebrate some of the things I've been a part of in the past become much more important."
