Summer Solstice

Emily Burrows, Mary Ruth Helms Carroll and Susan Lucas enjoy their frozen yogurt from the Local Yogurt food truck outside the Magic Wings Butterfly House

The first day of summer could not have fallen on a more appropriate day. With a temperature of more than 90 degrees at 6pm, Durhamites flocked to the Museum of Life and Science to enjoy an AfterHours event and celebrate the longest day of the year with food trucks, beer tents and train rides.

Event-goers also got to use a solar telescope to get the best view of the sun, enjoy contra dancing and live music, and participate in solar crafts, face-painting and tie-dyeing. Those who pre-registered for Invertevoria: A Culinary Experience got to sample invertebrates from around the world, like conchs, insect skewers and giant sago worms, during a four-course meal prepared by Sprout Café.

Check out our pics of the fun in our slideshow to the left.
