One of the quickest and easiest changes you can make to a home to

instantly upgrade a dated look is to switch out those out-of-fashion fixtures for fresher, more contemporary styles. Goodbye brass hello oiled bronze, or brushed nickel, or bright chrome. The sky’s the limit – literally so when you’re talking about your home’s light fixtures.

Here are our suggestions for choosing the perfectly sized chandelier.

To determine the right size fixture for a dining room, your first stop

should be the dining room table.

The diameter of the chandelier should be at least half the width of your table. If you have an eight foot ceiling, as many older homes do, the bottom of your fixture should hang 30 inches above the table. Got a newer home with higher ceilings? Add three inches of height for every extra foot of ceiling. For example, ten foot high ceilings would call for a chandelier hanging 36” above the table.

Chandeliers aren’t just for dining spaces anymore. Put ‘em in your hallway, your bedroom, even bathrooms. How do you know what size to choose here? Measure the length and width of your room. Add the

measurements together. Use that distance in feet to determine the

equivalent chandelier size in inches. For example, a ten by twelve foot

room would accommodate a chandelier that is 22 inches in diameter.
