I had the pleasure Saturday night of attending the sold-out Casino Night at the Durham Arts Council, hosted by the non-profit community builder L'Orage, which raised more than $5,000 for the charity KidZNotes.

It was L'Orage's first "real organized event," said co-organizer Sarah Harris, and it was a smashing success.

"We're very pleased with the turn-out and enthusiasm with which the community came out to support our mission of connecting with small and emerging causes in Durham," she said in an email a couple of days after the soiree.

"Not only is it important to financially support these small causes, but gaining name recognition is integral to their success. We are happy to add to the momentum that KidZNotes has already started building in the Durham community."

KidZNotes teaches at-risk kids to play classical music as an outlet to inspire them and divert them from potential pitfalls.

A worthy cause, and the 175 people who turned out in cocktail attire had a ball supporting it.
