Coalition to Unchain Dogs

One concert-goer gives his approval while others enjoy the music at last year's Music for Fences concert.

Keep your fingers crossed that Hurricane Irene gives Durham the slip, because you won't want rain to dampen the day at the 5th annual Music for Fences benefit concert this Saturday in Durham Central Park.

The Coalition to Unchain Dogs, a Durham-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the welfare of dogs living on chains, will host the concert. Proceeds will provide funds to build fences for families who own chained dogs, as well as provide free spay/neuter procedures and vaccinations.

"So far we have unchained over 1,100 dogs, giving them safety, room to run around freely and enhancing the bond between the owner and their dog," says Amanda Arrington, executive director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. "Building a fence not only changes the dog but it changes the person too."

The concert runs from 4-10pm with performances beginning at 4:30pm. Some of the participating bands include Johnny Paul Jason, Bustello, Billy Sugarfix’s Carousel, Lila and The Mitch Easter Sound. Beer will be provided by Big Boss Brewing Company along with food from Dos Perros. Sponsors, local businesses and animal welfare groups will also be at the event to showcase their organizations and services available.

"We'll also have a great auction with items from businesses across the Triangle, Dogstar Tattoo will be on site doing animal-related tattoos and our emcee is Robert Bland, a crowd favorite at The Monti," Amanda says. "So it will be a fun-filled night!"

Bring your chair and blanket (hopefully umbrellas can be left at home) and come support this great cause. Admission is $12 in advance and $15 at the event. Children under 12 are admitted free. For tickets, click here.

Music for Fences

Sadly, Irene did seem to keep a lot of folks away, but the hard-core animal lovers came out anyway! Kudos to the Coalition for their amazing work, to the musicians who came out to support them (Lila, you guys rock!), and to the vendors who braved the rain. Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital was there, and we continue to support the work and the message of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. See you next year!
