Rock and Shop

Still got some Christmas shopping to do? Stop by the corner of West Geer Street and Rigsbee Avenue from noon-6pm this Saturday for the Rock & Shop Market. With a mix of fashion, art, jewelry, stationary, furniture and more represented at this annual celebration of local designers and businesses of the Triangle, there's bound to be a gift perfect for someone on your list.

Michelle Smith, the founder of the Rock & Shop Market, has plenty experience in the business of local design. Michelle worked as a web and graphic designer for seven years before designing her own multimedia textile and pattern goods. Also a photographer and stylist, Michelle curates window displays in unused storefronts in downtown Raleigh and Durham and runs her own online shop and blog, indieNC, which features products from North Carolina artists. Michelle took some time to give us a little insight into how she started Rock & Shop and what folks can expect at this year's market and beyond.

How did you come up with the idea for the Rock & Shop Market?

The Rock & Shop Market was born out of a desire to see an event that focused on highlighting the amazing talent in the Triangle, North Carolina area. As a designer myself, I was looking to find a venue to sell my wares alongside my local peers who were making amazing handmade products themselves. Before Etsy was a household name, I was hoping to create an event that would connect the community with the artists behind the products in a fun way. When I started it in 2004, there was nothing like it in North Carolina. Now the area hosts numerous markets with similar missions, and it's exciting to see the area thrive and support these markets and the emerging artisans and musicians that are showcased.

How has the market changed over the years?

In the beginning there were about 15 vendors and it was held in the gymnasium of a YWCA in Raleigh. Now the event hosts over 100 juried vendors from all over the country (though most are still from North Carolina). We've had amazing musicians the whole time.

Is there anything new or exciting at the market this year?

This year's market will be held indoors at three adjacent venues in Durham. More than 100 juried designers selling their hip, handmade wares will be spread out across The Fullsteam Brewery, Motorco Music Hall and The Trotter Building. There will be a fashion show showcasing five local apparel designers, more than 10 food trucks and great bands: Phil Cook & His Feat and The Small Ponds.
