If you build it, they will eat.

That's the essential idea behind the Creative Food Drive, a unique event slated for Oct. 15 at the Durham Farmers' Market that will benefit the Durham Food Bank.

Right now organizers, chiefly MHA Works Architects, are trying to get businesses large and small to pledge to collect at least 500 food items or $500 worth of items. That's not that unusual.

What is unusual is what they'll be doing with them before they get donated to help feed the hungry in our community.

On the day of the event, five-person teams from each participating business will gather at the Farmers' Market to build a structure out of the food items. Prizes will be awarded for most creative, most difficult, most food raised, best overall and people's choice.

Then all the food will be loaded up on a truck and sent off. Organizers are hoping at least 40 businesses participate.
