At long last, the South Durham Farmers' Market has arrived.
It sets up shop every Saturday at the Greenwood Commons at 5410 N.C. 55 from 8am-noon. Crowds have been great and growing since the market opened a few weeks ago.
This isn't taking anything away from the wildly popular - and, for now, much larger - Durham Farmers' Market that packs Durham Central Park every Saturday.
Organizers of the southern version say a) the downtown market already has all its vendor slots full and b) this market allows people who live on the south side of town to avoid the 20 minute or so drive downtown.
The way I look at it, part of the point of buying local produce is to reduce the carbon footprint of the food we consume. I happen to live right around the corner from the new market, so I'm able to walk with my family to buy fresh, organic food without hopping in the car. No exaggeration: it's pretty thrilling, one of those, "Gosh, I love living here' kind of things.
