This & That Jam

Ali Rudel, here with her daughter and husband Ben, is helping craft a cookbook that will be published in 2014

Ali Rudel of This & That Jam, Elizabeth Turnbull of Old Havana Sandwich Shop and Annemie Tonken of Megapixie Photography are teaming up to create a new cookbook that's rooted in Durham history and tradition.

Set to be published by Light Messages Publishing in 2014, Starting Fresh will include more than 300 recipes that use ingredients sourced from local farmers' markets. Ali and Elizabeth will provide most of the recipes, but some will come from the area’s chefs, farmers and other culinary gurus. Annemie will be taking the photos, which will illustrate not only the cookbook's dishes, but the people behind them.

Starting Fresh is meant to be more than just your average cookbook. It seeks to show how Durham found its way onto the foodie map, as well as share the stories of local farmers and recipe contributors who make this city unique. Ali, Elizabeth and Annemie also plan to include essays from local writers and journalists—all part of the plan to make this cookbook something that's distinctly Durham.

To see the journey to publication firsthand, check out the Starting Fresh blog, where the trio posts recipes, photos and stories about the project. Recent recipes for dishes like roasted butternut squash soup and purple sweet potato buttermilk pie will have your mouth watering.
