Stuff We Like: Big Bundts

What it is: So, I have officially found my new favorite spot for a sweet treat. Let's just say you have some errands to run and you've taken your kiddos with you.  You've headed over to New Hope Commons and hit up Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Michaels, maybe Party City. I don't know if your kids are like mine, but they have been painful to take on errands recently - continuously trying to come home with every toy or snack they see, fighting with each other, or just whining about when we will finish. Well, you'll be happy to learn there is now the perfect spot to stop by after a morning of errands with the kiddos, a perfect place for a delicious reward for both mom and kids after all that shopping: Big Bundts & More!

I spotted this bakery when I saw their new sign next door to two of our other new favorites, Pomegranate Kitchen and Straw Valley Cafe and Wine Bar. I was intrigued. Of course, the name alone got me singing that famous diddy from long ago. Once I did a little research, I learned that Big Bundts is a fabulous new bakery that has been doing catering and making appearances at the Chapel Hill and Southern Village farmers' markets. Now, they have a store front right next to New Hope Commons where we can all go to satisfy our sweet tooth.

Big Bundts makes - you guessed it - bundt cakes, as well as larger cakes to order, and I can't wait to try them. We've been sampling their smaller goodies (bundlettes and bundt bites), and we are in love! You can head by their store Tuesday-Friday from 9am-1pm, generally speaking. You never quite know what will be on the menu that day and what will be ready, but you can pretty much guarantee it will be good. Last week they had some delicious buttermilk bundlettes topped with powdered sugar and some scones right out of the oven. It smelled delicious and tasted just as yummy. Plus, owner Kristen Benkendorfer was nice enough to show my little ones her kitchen. While they don't have any tables where we can sit, we will still definitely be back anytime we drive by to pick up a little treat to take with us.

What we liked: We love the baked goods of all varieties, of course. I was really impressed by everything I tried and the boys and I loved them. Plus, Kristen was so nice. She didn't mind us stopping by in the middle of her baking and was happy to take the time to talk to them and show them around. That always makes for a fun experience for the kids. It's also really nice that you can pick up Big Bundts at her storefront, at the aforementioned farmers' markets or at several other shops including Southern Season, Straw Valley Cafe and Wine Bar, Bull Street Gourmet and Market and Merritt's Store and Grill.

What we would change: Since she is primarily working for catering and the farmers markets right now, there is not a set menu that you can expect every time you stop by, but that's okay because anything she has is delicious.  Plus, her hours are dependent on when she's there baking, so right now she's there primarily between 9 and 1 on Tuesday-Saturday but not in the afternoons or on the weekends.
