Bulltown Strutters get the crowd going at Fullsteam
No one likes to do math on Friday, but here's a quick equation: 2 clarinets + 3 trombones + 1 tuba + 1 ukelele + 1 banjo + 1 flute + 1 meldoica + 1 mandolin + 1 kick-butt percussion section + 3 fantastic vocalists = good times.
You know you're at the right party if the Bulltown Strutters are there doing their New Orleans-inspired thing.
The fam and I attended Fullsteam's 1st birthday party a few weeks back, and I was reminded why I love this grassroots parade band. Bombastic, joyous and just a bit silly, the Strutters had me and my young'uns bopping and dancing through their entire set.
What they may lack here and there in musical precision they more than make up for in energy and, yes, volume. These cats bring it.
They play lots of old standards, including a fun, upbeat sing-a-long of You Are My Sunshine. The band, formed in 2010, describes themselves this way on their Facebook page: "We are a community parade band, inspired by street band traditions from New Orleans to Brazil and beyond. Our intention is to build camaraderie with fun music and dance, inspiring onlookers to join the revelry. The gigs are flowing in as our community is ripe for butt-shaking, smile-making, shake-and-boogie music. We play private parties, benefits, festivals, weddings and senior homes."
If you hate happiness, this ain't your band. If, on the other hand, you enjoy happiness, book them for your next gathering.
