City Beverage Hawaiian Martini

Stuff We Like is our new Web series. Every Friday, we'll share an event, a place, a dish, a drink or just something random that the editors love here at Durham Magazine.

Alright, so I promise eventually we'll do one of these that doesn't involve something edible or imbibable. But, let's face it, we could do nothing but and never run out of subjects. This just in: Durham has lots of good stuff to eat and drink.

Let's go with the latter category this week with the handiwork of Jordan Edwards, bartender extraordinaire at City Beverage, one of my favorite spots.

Just about anything this guy whips up is tasty and creative. See his explosive recipe for a Manhattan on Page 8 of our September issue for a great example.

But we're all feeling a bit more patriotic these days, which is why the beautiful red, white and blue Hawaiian Martini is the perfect way to toast our Olympians, celebrate summer and satisfy your sweet tooth.

I'd recommend swinging by City Bev's Hope Valley Road location to let the pros handle this one. Plus, nothing like having a cocktail with an umbrella sticking out of it at a tiki bar.

But if you'd like to try this at home, Jordan was kind enough to share the recipe:

-Equal parts Malibu rum and orange-flavored vodka

-1 oz. pineapple juice

-Shake "real hard for a nice frothy top"

-Then drizzle blue curacao and maraschino juice down the edge of the glass for "that fireworks look"

-Garnish with orange wedge and marachnio cherry

I'd recommend this one as a dessert drink - it's pretty sweet. And I think one's enough, but it sure is tasty and fun.

If you do have one too many, you can always head back to City Bev the next day for the Wisconsin Hangover Cure burger. Just add that to the list of edible stuff we like.
