Columbia Crest

Columbia Crest is one of the surest bets in the wine world. Their approximate 4-tier gradation of quality is easy to understand, yet all possess a similar profile - wonderful value for your dollar. Today's wine is in the 3rd tier  above "Two Vines" and "Grand Estates" and below their premium "Reserve" line. It is their H3 series, (referring to the vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills wine appellation.)

2009 Columbia Crest H3 Cabernet Sauvignon  $15 srp *

A fully expressive, velvety nose with fruit-packed density. Plum, black currant, mint and wildflowers are all melded into a sweeping, utterly charming bouquet. Flavors are concentrated and long with a chocolate-covered cherry/berry sensation and gritty tannins on the finish. There's an overall sense of sweetness which may not appeal to Euro-centric sensibilities, but I love its muscularity that promises to get even better with short-term cellaring. Hard to wait! Drink now-2015.

90/100 points

* Can sometimes be found for as little as $12.
