Stag's Leap

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of those great estates that, because it is so consistently excellent, gets picked on a lot. Since there are no inexpensive wines from this winery, people love to say that they're losing their touch, trading on their reputation, or similar hyperbole. But even though founder and owner Warren Winiarski sold his heralded winery in 2007, the terrific wines keep on coming. Today's Cabernet Sauvignon is a case in point.

2008 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars $55 srp

A little beauty just coming out of its shell. Purple to ruby color. A ripe but tight nose that needs to be coaxed a bit. Black cherry, blackberry dominate the fruit element with tobacco, licorice, earth, cocoa and graphite all contributing complexity. Bold dark flavors of cherry and blackcurrant with caramel, pepper, and mint on the beautifully balanced finish. Its quality doesn't hit you between the eyes - its charm sneaks up and embraces you after all. Open at least two hours before drinking. Drink now-2015.
