It’s to be expected that Communities In Schools of Durham, a nonprofit that empowers students to stay in school through community support, loves smart, young brains. The staff and volunteers also love the ‘80s, and have combined those passions into Thrill of the Nerds, a fundraiser inspired by the brain-loving zombies in Michael Jackson's Thriller and nerds from the movie Revenge of the Nerds.
Families can bring their kids in costume to the Junior League of Orange and Durham Counties at the historic Hill House, 900 S. Duke St., on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 3-6pm for Halloween festivities, including crafts, family games, live music, food, a silent auction, pumpkin hunt and more. In the spirit of the zombie/nerd theme, families and kids can compete in a costume contest with several categories, including Best Zombie, Best Nerd, Best Overall Family, Best Couple, Most Original and Best Under 12.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with face painting, making trick-or-treat bags or Halloween masks with the kids, running family games on the lawn, helping the bands, registration, etc. Those who help out receive a free T-shirt.
Sponsorship opportunities are also still available. Donate a product for the event (including gift cards or silent auction items for: maid service, spa/massage, restaurant, fun parks, movie tickets, season tickets or passes, dog sitters, baby sitters, car cleaning, home improvement, etc. or food items such as: candy, lollipops, cupcakes, mini-sandwiches, juice boxes, water bottles, candy apples or cotton candy), and have your company name listed at the event and on CIS’s website. Cash donations are also accepted.
Tickets cost $3 for ages 2-12 years old, and $6 for ages 13-plus. Funds raised from the event benefit nearly 5,000 students and families served by CIS of Durham. Buy your tickets here, and for more information, click here or call 919-403-1936.
