Nearly 46,500 Condé Nast Traveler readers rated 1,306 properties and places for the publication’s 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards. Out of the top hotels in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, The Umstead Hotel and Spa placed at No. 18, with a Reader’s Choice Rating of 89.8, while the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club tied with Mobile, Ala.’s Renaissance Battle House Hotel & Spa for the 44th spot on the list with an overall score of 83.6.
The Washington Duke received top marks for its rooms and location (yeah, Durham!). Danielle Nelson, a Duke student, commented that she has “wonderful memories of ‘Wa Duke’ dinners and weekend brunches with friends. The atmosphere and food [are] great.”
The Umstead scored best in the rooms, service and design categories, with one reader remarking on the top-notch artwork, staff and beautiful surroundings.
