OnlyBurger, hold the lines

OnlyBurger, hold the lines

Durham Central Park has played host to plenty of food truck rodeos, each more successful than the last.

"The only complaints," according to a press release from park leaders, "have been about the size of the crowd or the length of the wait in line."

As many of you may know, I wrote a piece in our August issue confessing to not quite getting the food truck craze. One of the problems was, in fact, the lines.

So I'm all for the little experiment happening from 6-8pm Sunday at DCP, organized by Brian Bottger of OnlyBurger and Becky Cascio of Pie Pushers. A limited number of tickets will be sold to this private "mini-rodeo." For the $50 price of admission, sample the wares from 15 trucks and enjoy beers from Carolina Brewery. (Bonus: Proceeds benefit the park!)

Tickets can be purchased at www.durhamcentralpark.org/events/meals-calendar-2012/  Or reservations can be made by contacting Ann Alexander at 919-794-8194 or contact@durhamcentralpark.org

I'll be there with bells on. Who'd like to join me? For free?

Leave a comment naming your favorite food truck dish and why you love it, along with an email address. We'll pick a winner, and you can collect two tickets the day of the event. A $100 value!

Deadline is noon Friday, Oct. 12. We'll notify the winner soon after.

Oh, should probably mention which trucks will be there. OnlyBurger, Pie Pushers, Triangle Raw Foods, Chick N Que, MaMa Duke's, Sympathy for the Deli, Porchetta, KoKyu BBQ, American Meltdown, Farmhand Foods, Monuts Donuts and The Parlour.

Yum! See y'all there.

Pie Pushers Rocks

Nothing stands in the way of my Wednesday night slice from Pie Pushers! I can always find them at Fullsteam with a menu board full of enticing seasonal delicacies. The crust is always perfectly crisp and laden with the best of local sausage, veggies and gooey melted cheese....I'm jonesing for a slice right now!

Mmmm

My vote goes to Bulkogi's Philly Cheese Steak. Perfect blend of two unique types of food - Korean bulkogi beef & a Philly Cheese Steak (the melted, gooey cheese is perfect!) (spamsucksballz@gmail.com)

yay food trucks!!

My favorite food truck dish is the vegetarian tacos from Kokyu BBQ - such a variety of flavors packed into one little dish - so delicious! Food trucks are the best, I'm so glad we have so many awesome options in Durham.

I'd love tickets

The sandwich I got from Porchetta last food truck rodeo was AMAZING.

Great idea!!!

I've been wanting to hit up the rodeos but the lines at the last event scared me off. This is a great idea!!! I'd love to try Nirvana pizza from Pie Pushers because I've heard great things.

Man, it's so hard to pick, but I would have to say that a cheeseburger from OnlyBurger is my favorite Durham food truck meal. So fresh, juicy and made to order, can't bear that!

No Contest!

The Parlour's Salted Caramel Ice Cream is not only the best food truck dish, it's the BEST ice cream to found! And that's saying something on both accounts.

Triangle Raw Foods!

I have enjoyed everything that Jane makes and love knowing that it's all natural and healthy for me. My favorite is the stuffed bell peppers and the sweet potato apple salad. I love the fact that all of the food is organic and local and a added bonus, it's gluten-free as well. If you haven't tried any of their food, this is a must try at the Rodeo.

Favorite Food Truck

Have you tried the maple bacon donuts that Monuts makes? They are worth getting up in the morning for. Oh, and KoKyu's duck fat tater tots. Yum.

Monuts Donuts!

The eclair with candied ginger on top is amazing (but then, so are all of her creations, especially the cake donuts)! It's not skimpily filled the way most versions of eclairs are--these are practically bursting, and the pairing of unique fillings, glazes, and toppings are varied enough so that there is always something new to look forward to every Saturday when she is at the DCP for the Farmers' Market Crowd.

I do like to tease her that I prefer the cake donuts but she has never made a cake donut with maple glaze and bacon the way she has with the traditional donuts. =)

Really, you can't go wrong with any of the food trucks. All have amazing food, friendly people, and a strong feeling of community that I love to support!

KoKyu BBQ

Sliders and takos and tots! Oh, fry!
We enjoy several of Durham's food trucks, but we lavish the most praise on KoKyu. A few months ago, a dear friend celebrated her husband's (another dear friend) birthday by sequestering the KoKyu truck in their driveway all night. So we, along with a host of party guests, got to taste everything on the menu. Needless to say, the folks in the truck ran out of most everything, because we couldn't help going back for seconds and thirds. To this day, some folks still wax poetic about the duck fat tots. Whatever language you speak, KoKyu means delicious in your native tongue.

Food!

can't go wrong with an only burger and salt and pepper fries, with salted caramel ice cream from the parlour for dessert! Great classic food, with a salty sweet kick at the end

Porchetta - Roast Pork Sandwiches in a mobile Little Italy!

Porchetta's porchetta sandwiches are my best food truck discovery so far! A friend introduced me to Italian roast pork sandwiches in Philadelphia's Little Italy years ago. It's the best sandwich I have ever eaten - thin sliced pork that's been roasted for hours, wilted greens sauteed with garlic, olive oil, and a splash of pork drippings, pickled cherry peppers for a little kick, served on crusty Italian bread. BEST...SANDWICH...EVER! I've never found one even close to what's in Philly, until I got to try Porchetta! A taste of Little Italy right here in Durham, on wheels! Porchetta's sandwiches are every bit as good as those in Little Italy - and they get my vote for favorite because there is simply nowhere else for possibly hundreds of miles to get one of these sandwiches done right!

Fact: Pie Pushers the Best Food Truck Ever (Or, is that just my opinion?)

I had to think really hard to narrow all my favorite dishes to a single choice. To me, the best dish should always have that one perfect bite, and one item truly stands out to me as that pure heavenly goodness: Pie Pushers Sausage Garlic Knot.

Yummmmmmm. The first time I ate that wonderful ball of dough, garlic and meaty bliss, was at Fullsteam. Since the night was winding down, and was fortunate enough to be one of the last orders of the night, Becky offered to throw a couple garlic knots in with my order – to which I didn’t object. Boy was I happy she did, obviously Pie Pushers has great crust, and chunky garlic is always a plus, but the sausage is PHENOMINAL. It has more of a breakfast taste than the traditional Italian pizza sausage, and the favor is so flavorful and tremendous, it’s literally indescribable.

Trust me … pizza dough, chucks of garlic and heaven-sent sausage is the perfect bite, and is my favorite food truck dish EVER!

Oh foodtrucks, I love thee so!

My favorite local foodtruck meal has definitely got to be an amazing burgery melty and delisiousy concoction that "Only Burger" has given birth to. I honestly don't know the name, but imagine a burger of your choice (beef, turkey, and yes even veggie!), spread with pimento cheese (which melts just perfectly with the heat of the burger), a nice generous chunk of fried green tomato, and a fried egg to crown the wondrous creation. I have tried it with both the beef and veggie burger, and each is equally divine!

Also, I would like to make a fond nod to "The Parlour's" Salted Caramel Ice Cream which is a fantastic feat of sweet and salty amazingness indeed. Sweet, creamy, salty, and cold - what a flavor and sense sensation!

Please consider me for the tickets, my belly would thank you eternally! ~;-] ~ EJ - ej.mcpuggington(at)gmail(dot)com

It's all about KoKyu!

KoKyu is hands down the best food truck out there. Every dish is PACKED with flavor - I mean, we're talking Flava-Flav giant clock on chain of flavor. The Unreal Buffalo Chicken Slider is - well, unreal! For vegetarians, meat-eaters, and everyone in-between, KoKyu has it all in one brightly-painted truck. I would say KoKyu is the King of Hearts - hands down.

Kokyu sliders

The Kokyu sliders are amazing! One of the tricky things at a food truck rodeo is trying to sample lots of things when so many dishes can be a full meal on their own: the samplers are a good small dish so you can mix and match! The Carolina Carnitas Slider is particularly great: the vinegary pork with avocado and cilantro is delicious.

Pie Pushers

Not only does Pie Pusher make an amazing pizza! I don't know how they make a thin crust pizza so satisfying. It is the best pizza in the Triangle by far. And then they go and team up with Farmhand Foods for the most delicious sausage, and you get the Best pizza in the state. I just ate lunch and I am already salivating just thinking of it. And I didn't even think I liked sausage, let alone sausage on my pizza.

Exclusive Food Truck Rodeo

Love the rodeos downtown. They add to that great, how do we describe it, "character" of Durham. They are social, and fun, you get to see lots of friends, and they are delicious! With every successful event downtown, we feel better and better about Durham (a place already high on itself.....and deservedly so). My favorite Durham truck is Only Burger. That pimento cheese they put on the hamburgers is awesome. Gooey and great!
In the spirit of full disclosure, my ALL TIME FAVORITE FOOD TRUCK is Biscuit Love in Nashville. My daughter and son-in-law own and run it!!! Just sayin'...........

Durham Rocks The Food Truck Scene

Who would've thought 20 years ago, Durham would become a foodie city with such creative restaurants and famous chefs! Now we are rocking forward to include more of the community in a fun, flavorful, flirty financial food fest with the best food trucks around. I love Durham and am embracing this scene to the max! Taking my kids and grandsons to enjoy whenever we can! Only Burger is not only yummy but a great instigator of the food trucks success. Go Durham, Eat Up!
